1. What is an IRS Form 2848?

Use Form 2848 to authorize an individual to represent you before the IRS. The individual you authorize must be a person eligible to practice before the IRS such as an Enrolled Agent, CPA, or Tax Attorney.

2. What is an IRS Transcript?

Most needs for tax return information can be met with a computer print-out of your return information called a "transcript". A transcript may be an acceptable substitute for an exact copy of a return by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and lending agencies for student loans and mortgages. A "tax return transcript" will show most line items contained on the return as it was originally filed. If you need a statement of your tax account which shows changes that you or the IRS made after the original return was filed, however, you must request a "tax account transcript".

3. What types of IRS Transcripts are available to individuals?

There are three types of transcripts available from the IRS for individuals; Account Transcript, Tax Return Transcript, Record of Account, and Wage and Earnings Transcript

  • A tax return transcript shows most line items from your tax return (Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) as it was originally filed, including any accompanying forms and schedules. It does not reflect any changes you, your representative or the IRS made after the return was filed. In many cases, a return transcript will meet the requirements of lending institutions such as those offering mortgages and for applying for student loans. These are only available for the current year plus the three previous years.
  • A tax account transcript shows any later adjustments either you or the IRS made after the tax return was filed. This transcript shows basic data, including marital status, type of return filed, adjusted gross income and taxable income. These are available 1991-current year.
  • Record of Account is a combination Tax Return Transcript and Tax Account Transcript. These are only available for the current year plus the three previous years.
  • Wage and Earnings Transcript includes data from these information returns: W-2, 1099 series, 1098 series, or 5498 series. State or local information is not included with the W-2 information. IRS may be able to provide wage and income transcript information for up to 10 years. Information for the current year is generally not available until the year after it is filed with the IRS.

4. What is an Enrolled Agent?

Enrolled Agents (EAs) are America's Tax Experts. EAs are the only federally licensed tax practitioners who specialize in taxation and also have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS.

5. Is my information Safe?

Your information is absolutely safe at Audit Detective. We do not share your data with anyone except for the IRS to acquire your transcripts and your local tax professional if you so choose and authorize.

6. How do I obtain my IRS Transcripts for free directly from the IRS?

The IRS has just announced individuals can order their transcripts online and they will be mailed to your residence of record within 2 weeks. IRS Transcript Download
